A Former Engineer at Apple named David Shayer has shared a stimulating story about making a custom iPod for the United States Government that only 4 people knew about in Apple. The whole project was a top secret and even Steve Jobs had no clue about it. Shayer in his story The Case of the highest Secret iPod on TidBits shared that this project started in late 2005 and 2 engineers from the US Department of Energy were also a part of this.

“Only 4 people at Apple knew about this secret project. Me (Shayer), The Director of iPod Software, The Vice Chairman of the iPod Division, & therefore The Senior Vice Chairman of Hardware. There was no written record . All communication was face to face ,” mentioned Shayer.

“They had added special hardware to the iPod, which generated data they wanted to record secretly. They were careful to form sure I never saw the hardware, and that i never did,” he said.

Shayer said that even he had no clue about what this secret iPod actually does. In his story he guessed that the key iPod were something sort of a stealth Geiger counter and should be wont to detect radioactivity.

So, why would anyone want to create a Geiger counter inside an iPod?

“You could walk around a city, casually taking note of your tunes, while recording evidence of radioactivity—scanning for smuggled or stolen uranium, as an example, or evidence of a unclean bomb development program—with no chance that the press or public would learn of what was happening,” he explained.

He ends this interesting story by saying that this project doesn’t exist for Apple. There are not any records and if you ever happen to ask Apple about it, their spokesperson would stick with a No comments as a typical answer.
